Road to the Redhat Cert

Hi all,

As some of you may know, I have a personal interest in Linux and that I’ve been practicing many different tasks in an effort to prepare myself to be a SysAdmin. I’ve recently finished my ‘winter’ semester at my college, having failed Calculus for the second time. As much as it pains to be to admit it, maybe I’m just not cut out for the place that program positions me in. I decided, with heavy heart, to drop out of college in favour of a more glamorous future.

I’ve set my sights now on the RedHat certification. This decision was not made impulsively and I’m, quite frankly, terrified of what’s to come; I’m also excited for it. By the end of the month, I’ll find out if I’ve truly got the chops to become a system administrator because I’ll be taking the RHCSA exam. June 30th is the exact date and the exam will be given by Exit Certified in Ottawa. I live in Montreal but it’ll be easy enough to take a train from here to there. It would also cost less to do so.

Speaking of money, it’s going to cost a lot for this exam and at the moment, I’m looking at $530CAD + $80CAD for the return trip on the train. To help offset the costs, I’ve set up a GoFundMe asking for half the total amount of what it’s gonna cost. If I don’t feel confident enough, however, around 5 days before the exam, I’ll postpone it to July 28th. July 29th is the following available date for the exam.

During the next month, I’ll be documenting the things I’m learning and it’s quite probable that I’ll post some tutorials for how to do certain things (the first of which will be how to set up an LDAP server). After the exam is completed and I’m certified I’ll document my journey to becoming a SysAdmin and from then on, post about certain things I’ve done at the new job.
